T&D Storm Response – Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico

BHI Energy’s D&D Power crews responded to Hurricane Sandy in particularly critical conditions on Long Island. The hurricane’s storm surge had shifted houses on their foundations, damaging gas lines and filling some homes with natural gas. Our teams were replacing several sections of down wire when they heard multiple explosions in the distance, from homes that ignited when power was restored in that area. Power was immediately shut off to the entire neighborhood, and a new job plan created which involved thoroughly inspecting each home before power was resupplied. BHI manages the challenge of working with unfamiliar teams in hazardous conditions by maintaining detailed work instructions and stringent safety standards. Our experienced team leaders are able to create safe and effective plans in storm response conditions, dealing with unknown challenges that require emergent solutions based on training and experience, in order to safely restore power to those in need.
