HPFF Maintenance Services
Protect the reliability of your underground transmission system
High-pressure fluid-filled (HPFF) cable systems are critical infrastructure – and maintaining them requires specialized knowledge, careful planning and experienced field support.
W.A. Chester provides turnkey HPFF maintenance services for utilities across the country. Our proactive approach helps identify developing issues before they lead to outages, costly emergency repairs or environmental concerns. From initial inspections and baseline data collection to testing, documentation and recommended next steps, we help utilities better understand the condition of their systems and plan with confidence.
A proactive approach to HPFF system reliability
Routine inspection and condition assessment can help utilities:
- Identify signs of fluid leaks, corrosion, insulation deterioration and other developing concerns
- Reduce the risk of unplanned outages and system failures
- Extend the service life of critical underground transmission assets
- Improve maintenance planning and emergency preparedness
- Establish reliable baseline data for long-term condition monitoring
Turnkey HPFF maintenance services
Our maintenance programs can be tailored to the condition, configuration and priorities of each utility’s system. Services include:
Manhole inspections and maintenance
We inspect manhole structures, pipe coatings, valves, seals, cable supports and related components for signs of wear, water intrusion, corrosion or leakage. Our teams can also perform cleanout, minor coating repairs, photo documentation and detailed reporting with recommendations for further repair or monitoring.
Dissolved gas analysis (DGA)
DGA sampling provides valuable insight into the condition of HPFF cable insulation. By analyzing gases present in the dielectric fluid and monitoring trends over time, utilities may be able to identify indications of overheating, partial discharge, arcing or insulation degradation before they develop into more serious problems. We coordinate sampling, laboratory analysis, results review and recommendations—and can install sampling valves when needed.
Termination inspections
Our teams inspect terminations and above-ground piping for leaks, damaged porcelain, labeling issues and other visible concerns. Maintenance can include verifying circuit and phase identification, retorquing termination bolts and venting accumulated gases when requested.
Pressurization plant assessments
We evaluate pressurization plant equipment, including valves, flanges and gaskets, and can review system operations, protocols and hydraulic documentation. When requested, our engineering team can help develop action plans that support faster, more organized response in the event of a system issue.
Cathodic protection, fault location and leak detection
Proper cathodic protection helps safeguard buried steel pipe against external corrosion. W.A. Chester can coordinate the inspection, testing and troubleshooting of cathodic protection systems, along with specialized fault-location and leak-detection services, as part of a comprehensive maintenance program.
Specialized experience. One coordinated partner.
W.A. Chester brings decades of experience working with high-voltage underground transmission cable systems. Our turnkey model gives utilities one knowledgeable partner to coordinate inspections, testing, minor maintenance, engineering support, documentation and follow-up recommendations – helping turn field data into a practical maintenance plan.
