HDD Rig Solutions for Your Most Challenging Crossings
Summit Underground Services is a solution-driven maxi rig Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) contractor serving the electric power, oil and gas, water, wastewater, and telecommunications markets.
Our team brings more than 250 years of combined trenchless experience to hard rock drilling, challenging subsurface conditions, and long-distance, large-diameter installations. Our specialties include shore approaches and water-to-water crossings.
We collaborate with owners, engineers, and project teams to develop practical, constructible solutions – from initial planning and design review through tooling selection and construction.

Supporting Critical Infrastructure
- Electric Power: HDD crossings for underground transmission and distribution infrastructure, including conduit, HVDC, HVAC, XLPE and high-pressure fluid-filled (HPFF) cable systems.
- Oil & Gas: Large-diameter pipeline installations beneath waterways, transportation corridors, and other obstacles.
- Water & Wastewater: Long-distance and large-diameter crossings for water transmission, wastewater conveyance, and municipal infrastructure.
- Telecommunications: HDD conduit crossings for fiber and communications networks.
Built Around Your Ground Conditions
Every crossing requires an approach matched to the geology and topography. Summit combines both soft soils and rock drilling experience with practical solutions for variable formations and difficult subsurface conditions.
- Planning and Design Assist: Evaluate crossing requirements, available geotechnical information, access, staging, environmental considerations, sound abatement needs, and installation constraints.
- Engineering Review and Constructability: Connect proposed designs with field realities, identify risks early, and develop practical alternative solutions.
- Tooling and Drilling Strategy: Plan tooling selection, drilling fluid programs, hydraulic fracture and inadvertent return analysis, pullback calculations, buoyancy control plans, pullback overbend calculations and layouts, and drilling and reaming sequences around anticipated ground conditions and installation requirements.
- Construction and Execution: Coordinate equipment, crews, and installation activities, monitor drilling performance, and adapt as encountered conditions require.
From Early Planning Through Construction
Summit supports Design-Build, Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC), and Construction Manager at Risk (CMAR) project teams with specialized HDD expertise throughout project development and construction.
Our focus is straightforward: understand the crossing, anticipate the challenges, and develop the plan, tooling strategy, and execution approach needed to deliver it safely and efficiently.
